What if my child is less than eight?
This is a group intervention. Has your child ever participated in an organized group program before? Do you think they have the attention to participate in a group setting? We have had several 6 year old children who have participated in the past and they have done very well. We have several physical therapy students who volunteer to help with the program. Many times we will buddy up some of the younger children with the college students to help keep the children on track and moving!
Do you see many older children? Boys? very heavy children? children who are just a “little” heavy?
We see a wide range of children – all ages- all sizes – all shapes. The composition of the group really varies between groups. The average age is typically 12 years old and is a mix of boys and girls. We always get a few older children (14-15 years). The college students who volunteer help to bridge the gap between the older children and the adults. Some parents will report that their children are just a little “stocky” or have put on quite a few pounds just over the past few months. Other parents may report that weight has been a long standing issue for their child. Many of these children would meet the clinical diagnosis of being obese.
Do you stress dieting with the children?
We try to provide the children and the parents with knowledge to make good nutritional choices. We discuss the importance of moderation and appropriate proportion size. For many of the children – especially the younger ones, the goal in weight control is for them to hold their weight steady and to grow into their body. For other children – the goal may be weight loss. This is really a decision between you as the parent and your child’s pediatrician. We are happy to answer any questions that you have but realize that each child’s goal may be a little different.
How are children referred to the program?
A child may be referred by their pediatrician or a parent can inquire and register their child directly.
What if I work and can’t always get my child to the program?
Only participants who attend 80% or more of the classes will be entitled to Insurance reimbursement.
