Darlene’s Story

William-Emslie Family YMCA

“After learning that I was the grandmother of a set of twins who were in the Oklahoma foster care system, I knew that I would have to try and do whatever it took to bring these girls home to their family here in Buffalo. Giving all glory to God, my 6 year old grandchildren walked into my life and into their new home for the first time on September 2, 2014. As a single working mom already raising a set of teenage twin daughters of my own, I knew that with my income, it would be a bit challenging due to the new additions of the family. The YMCA staff has been there for me since day one. With my school age grandchildren needing child care, I was made aware of the financial assistance program the organization offered and decided to apply. Through the generosity of the scholarship that the Y provided to us, I am forever grateful. I can work in peace knowing that my children are well taken care of by the YMCA staff. We all love it at the YMCA, especially my grandchildren. It is our escape during cold wintery months and really hot summers. It has been a couple of years since joining, but one thing is for sure. I’m not sure where we would be without the YMCA being a part of our community.”
