My Y Story: Mark
Your donation to YMCA Buffalo Niagara makes a difference in the lives of children and families right here in Western New York.
“Seeing the smiles, high fives, and hearing the generous ‘thank you’ comments warm our hearts. It’s a genuine experience.”
Mark’s first experience with the YMCA Turkey Trot began more than twenty years ago when his children volunteered in grade school. Decades later, he and his family have made the event an annual tradition. “We just kept volunteering after that,” he says. “It’s fun!” Mark has recruited many others to join him over the years, including his sisters, nieces, and friends. They all meet at a local coffee shop for coffee and bagels before the big race every year. “It’s great quality time together,” he says.
There are many reasons why Mark enjoys taking part in the YMCA Turkey Trot, but it’s the history that keeps him coming back year after year. “Being part of a long-time Buffalo tradition is exciting. The fact that the YMCA benefits from the event makes it even better.” Mark and his family even participate in the annual costume contest. “Seeing the smiles, high fives, and hearing the generous ‘thank you’ comments warm our hearts. It’s a genuine experience.”
Mark says he spreads the word about the YMCA Turkey Trot whenever he can. “I have this conversation with bystanders, out-of-town visitors, and people who are new to the area every year. I tell them it’s a tradition and the oldest consecutively run footrace in North America. Dress up, have fun, and participate!”
