Active Older Adult Fitness

Just because we get older doesn’t mean we have to stop exercising…and it’s never too late to get moving. Exercise has been proven to promote mental agility in addition to longevity and good health. YMCA Buffalo Niagara offers a number of fitness and aquatic programs, field trips, and special events designed for the older adult. Below is a sample of our programming for active older adult members.

The YMCA Weight Loss Program is designed to help people seeking a healthier weight achieve their goals by making small, modest changes to daily behaviors and forming sustainable, healthy habits. Rather than advocate for specific or restrictive short-term solutions, this program helps participants build skills for successful lifestyle changes. Participants in this 12-week, group based, program will discuss weekly topics such as balanced eating, physical activity, goal setting, positive psychology, and behavior sustainability to self-design action plans and achieve weight loss goals. Participants work with Y staff trained in supportive cancer care to safely achieve their goals such as building muscle mass and strength; increasing flexibility and endurance; and improving confidence and self-esteem. By focusing on the whole person and not the disease, LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is helping people move beyond cancer in spirit, mind, and body.

Our 16-week program is designed to aid in the prevention of diabetes for the individuals who have pre-diabetes. Each one-hour session covers diet, exercise, and behavior modification. A $50 co-pay is required for Independent Health participants. The additional fees are covered by BlueCross BlueShield and Independent Health upon completion of the course.
