Camp Kenan Leadership Programs
Teens learn teambuilding, character and leadership development, problem solving, and life skills at YMCA Camp Kenan. Our Leaders In Training (LIT) and Counselors In Training (CIT) programs include a series of activities and projects designed to build future camp counselors and leaders.
Leaders In Training (LIT)
The Leaders in Training (LIT) Program provides a chance for teens to enjoy all that YMCA Camp Kenan has to offer through service, adventure, and character development. Campers who are 15 years of age prior to date attending camp can participate in this two-week program. LITs work on daily activities with an emphasis on teambuilding, character and leadership development, event planning, group management, and fun. Camp service projects, a two-day kayak and hiking trip to nearby Golden Hill State Park, and the opportunity to lead camp program activities are highlights of the program.
Two-week sessions, Sunday to Saturday
Dates: July 28-August 3, August 4-10
Counselors In Training (CIT)
At YMCA Camp Kenan, we place great emphasis on training and developing our future staff members as they transition from camper to counselor. Campers who are 16 years of age prior to date attending camp or who have completed our LIT program may apply for this three week program. The CIT program provides formal training for young adults who enjoy camping and working with children. The first week of the session is an intensive week of training with workshops run by the teen leadership director and administrative staff. The first week is very similar to our staff training week, and prepares CITs for the challenges and rewards of being a camp counselor. CITs are assigned to a cabin group during their second and third weeks, where they shadow and learn from the cabin counselors. CITs are evaluated by both their counselors and by the teen leadership director, receiving feedback on their performance each week. Once their session has been completed, CITs may be invited to apply for current available positions and/or the next summer’s positions.
Three-week sessions, Sunday to Saturday
